The Valley of Vilcabamba gained international attention in the 1970’s when «National Geographic» published an article naming Vilcabamba as one of three places in the world with the highest incidence of people over 100 years of age per population, an «Island of Longevity», many factors contributed to this phenomenon such as the Climate, high concentration of minerals in the WATER and SOIL, physical activity and a simple diet of Beans, Plantains, Yuca, range chickens, eggs, homemade cheese, pork and «orchata» a wonderful drink, a mixture of medicinal plants. Vilcabamba is a Sub Tropical valley located 1700 meters above sea level, with a constant warm climate and without sudden changes in temperature, it maintains 18° to 22° celsius most of the year.This steady climate makes it favorable to the Cardio-Vascular System. They totally choose favourites so it's hard to experience any upward movement unless you are "one of the chosen few". They have no accountability for their worker's health. They put untrained people in very dangerous working situations. It used to be an okay place to work till they fired everyone and rehired people not appropriate for their roles. Majority of the time people do not show up for their shifts. Human Resources are completely useless and don't understand any of the roles involved in the organization.
They never consult any staff members before making changes. Administrative staff and upper management are completely tone deaf as to what is happening to the actual frontlines.
You will never be given positive acknowledgement for doing a good job. Critical events will occur and instead of management making sure you are okay, they will negatively criticize you and make you question your decisions. In my experience, if you took a gentler approach, recognizing that clients often aren’t - more.Īt the Alpha House you are a just number. However, there does seem to be a culture where yelling at clients in order to "stand up for yourself" is seen as the correct response. I want to be clear that many of the people working for Alpha House are good at their jobs and are there trying to make a positive impact. There are some quirky scheduling practices here (like being scheduled for days outside your contracted hours unless you explicitly block them off), so this would have saved me some difficulty had I gotten this information when I first started.
The presentation was also where scheduling was explained to new hires. I was not advised of this until the presentation. If you have these before your start date and become sick with either over the course of your employment, your treatment is covered by Worker’s Compensation.

This presentation covered a lot of important information, like a recommendation to get a Hepatitis C vaccine and TB skin test before starting work. I did not receive an onboarding presentation until nearly three months into my position. The on-boarding for my position was not well executed. However, I believe that the way this organization is run is also a contributing factor. Of course, the job is by nature very challenging mentally, and you will witness and experience traumatic events working here-that is a given.
One of the first things I was told when I began my job at Alpha House was that there was an incredibly high turn-over rate the going estimate at that time (on average) was 3-6 months for my role.
